Aviation

The global airline industry is producing strong financial results.

The growth of this industry will be significant over the next 10 years and will be very challenging because:

  • New-generation aircraft (designed and built after 2000) are introducing improved operating costs and new technology (new materials, but also new data collections) allows maintenance organizations to take action before a component fails promises to improve reliability and reduce costs. The challenge here is that there are not yet proven systems to accept and analyze the data for proactive decision-making.
  • The in-service commercial airline fleet is forecast to grow from nearly 25,000 aircraft beginning of 2017 to over 35,000 by 2027.
  • Between 2027-2030, around 60% of the fleet will be new-generation aircraft having latest technology in place.
  • The major growth is expected in Asia, especially China and India. They will become the largest region, nearly doubling in in-service fleet and related MRO demand. North America will slip to the third-largest region, behind Asia and Europe.

These predictions lead to significant changes and challenges for the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) sector. It demands fast adjustments on the infrastructure and new facilities as well as train a workforce to keep up with the rapidly rising demand. The original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will increase their share of the aftermarket, which will impact the independent MRO sector, particularly the smaller businesses.
