Intern/thesis Assignment 1: IT budget/OPEX ratio in relation to perceived EAM ICT tool effectiveness

Asset intensive companies use software (IT Tools) to manage their assets throughout their respective life cycles. Here OXplus focuses on operations and maintenance stages of an asset’s life cycle.

IT budgets are often discussed. We are interested whether perceived EAM (Enterprise Asset Management) ICT tool effectiveness is related to IT budget (e.g. IT budget/OPEX ratio or IT budget/turnover ratio. Does a larger budget lead to higher effectiveness? (Hypothesis).

In this assignment, students conduct desk research on IT budget and Enterprise Asset Management (and ERP) IT tool effectiveness to come to a model comprising uniform IT budget measures and means by which perceived effectiveness can be determined (questionnaire).

The proposed model addresses the variables of the hypothesis we agreed upon. The agreed hypothesis will be tested by means of empirical quantitative research.

OXplus will provide guidance in constructing the model as well as the questionnaires. Conversion of questions to a validated measurement tool will be a task of the students. Conducting quantitative research will also be a task of the students

The research can be exercised in a way that bachelor/master thesis criteria are met.

Approximate duration of this assignment is 4 to 6 months.

OXplus will provide an internship compensation

Candidate Profile:

  • Preferably two students bachelor/master (technical) university business administration specialized in Supply Chain Management, Operations Management and/or Organizational Design and Development.
  • Speak and write English and Dutch fluently
  • Strong affinity with work processes is required
  • Affinity with IT tools and engineering work field is strongly recommended

Intern/thesis Assignment 2: Achieving strategic Asset Management goals through an ICT tool implementation?

Asset intensive companies usually develop their Asset Management capabilities through strategic plans and programs. Often an ICT tool implementation is part of these plans and programs. Companies assign budgets to these implementations in order to achieve their goals. Budgets are justified with business cases where the implementation typically leads to benefits (e.g., return on investment).

Based on OXplus’ experience we argue that an Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) ICT tool implementation on its own will not yield benefits (goals attainment) as stated in business cases. The EAM ICT tool can be seen as an enabler that makes growing in Asset Management maturity possible. It is the Asset Management organizational capabilities that need to be developed to reap the full benefits/goals set prior to an EAM implementation or other EAM program. Below is an example of the mechanism as we see it in our business. Revenue (or e.g. asset performance) will increase after post EAM implementation efforts.

As such, one could identify a stages model on how a company’s Asset Management maturity will develop. That is, first work on enablers and second develop and embed capabilities within the organization.

This is based on OXplus’ real life experience. We would like these observations to be challenged by means of thorough academic research.

There are various ways of challenging our view. This includes:

  • Literature study: academic point of view
  • Case study: in depth review and analysis of a business case of completed implementation project.
  • Empirical quantitative research: develop a hypothesis that will be tested using questionnaire measurement tools

Preferably, a combination of the latter mentioned research methods will be used by the students.

The research can be exercised in a way that bachelor/master thesis criteria are met.

Approximate duration of assignment: 4 to 6 months

Intern/thesis Assignment 3:  Most influencing factors on asset performance

Asset performance can, for instance, be defined as uptime of a production asset or production output compared to the sum of capital cost and operational cost (maintenance).

We are interested in how asset performance can be objectively measured at varying companies (enables benchmarking/comparison). In addition, we are interested in the key factors that influence or account for asset’ performance and to what extent. Examples of key factors influencing asset performance may be found in a company’s asset management maturity.

An approach to this assignment could be to define a number of asset performance determinants and ask companies their perceived important-ness.

The research can be exercised in a way that bachelor thesis criteria are met.

Approximate duration of assignment: 3 to 4 months.
